The Father's Photographs - Kyoto City Zoo

The following photographs were taken in February 1995 at the Kyoto Municipal Zoo. Pictured are two Asian elephants, one with long, thin ivory. Referencing the online elephant databases of Dan Koehl and Jonas Livet and the zoo's own website, two female Asian elephants resided at the zoo during the time period indicated. 24 year old Mito arrived in 1979 and 15 year old Tomo arrived the following year. Only Mito remains at the zoo; Tomo died in April 2001.

Kyoto City Zoo History
Referencing an outline history of the Kyoto City Zoo on their official website, the zoo acquired their first elephant in September 1907, four and a half years after opening. This animal, as shown in an image, was a male which arrived from Thailand. The permanent elephant facility was completed fifteen years later in March 1923 and "Parma Gou" was transferred from his temporary holding facility at the zoo. No further information can be found at this time regarding Parma Gou, though the information gathered assisted in adding the new elephant record to Elephant.se.

I eagerly anticipate associating with new individuals with an interest or history in elephants, elephant history and elephant record keeping. If you have further information regarding the animals or locations questioned in the article, please leave a comment or message me in an effort to complete their records for elephant historians.
