De Olmense Zoo in Belgium again has elephants, two females!"2012 - Olifanten Jenny en Kariba houden koffieklets"

Jenny arrived December 31st 2011 from Circus Alexandre Bouglione. With this transfer they ended keeping elephants! The second to arrive came from Tierpark Ströhen in Germany. Kariba arrived Olmen March 27th 2012. She couldn’t cope the dominancy in Ströhen, so they searched, and found, a new home for her.

Naturtierpark Ströhen-Wagenfeld, Germany
According to the records of Elephant.se, the Strohen Zoo acquired their three female African elephants from Zimbabwe in 1994. All born in 1987, the group was reduced to two with Kariba's transfer to Belgium last month. Macombe and Zambesi are managed in Free Contact. Two other animals are listed as relocated from the German facility - Makonga and Mashibi, both to Circus Carl Busch. Although born in 1982 and 1984 respectively, little else is known about the animals other than the former's death in 2005.

There is much contradiction from different sources regarding the elephant history of this institution. See the comments below and an upcoming additional article for further information. The above is not necessarily correct (especially dates) and was originally based on preexisting records at Elephant.se, which will be corrected once the proper information is found.

Circus Alexandre Bouglione kept Jenny as a single animal preceding her sale to the zoo. (See comments below for further information regarding the elephant history of this performing group). No further information is available about her origin or arrival, other than an estimated birth in 1982.

Elephant.se lists another animal relocated from the circus, the male African elephant Afrique. Arriving in 1987 from Louis Lenaers, the animal was retired from circus life in April 2000 to the Belgium park Monde Sauvage Safari. The 28 year old resides with two African females, 31 year old Wankie and 36 year old Kenya/Kenia.

ReplyDeleteThis site tells they relocated just one of their first couple of elephants to a circus, after the other one died.
I found some information in the books issued by the EEG, but they are contradictory.
ReplyDeleteIn the 1992 book the list 0.3 African elephants at Ströhen: Maschibi en Macombe both born 1985 in Zimbabwe and arrived 1986, and Zambesi born 1987 in Zimbabwe and arrived 1990/1991.
At that time they also list 0.2 African elephants at Carl Busch (Alfons Wille) Masniba born 1984 and Makonga born 1985.
In the 2002 book four African elephants are listed for Ströhen in a importlist.
Kariba, Macombe, Sambesi and Maschibi all are listed to be born in 1992 and arrive 1994.
Strange! Because you can't write a book with information before elephants arrive.
Maschibi is listed with the line "Tod durch Elektrodraht", but no year of death is mentioned.
I think we should list the 5 elephants as mentioned in the 1992 book and list Kariba to be born in 1985 and arrive in 1986.
Perhaps more information will come to us later on ;)

ReplyDeleteThank you for the updates. Do you think the "death by electric fence" comment was mistaken for Maschibi instead of Makonga? Makonga was the elephant listed as dead in 2005 at Elephant.se. The entry at the database for Maschibi includes a photograph contributed from Daniel Hagist, taken in Karlsruhe in 2009.
I'm not sure right now.

I would suggest that a record keeping of African elephants would be very boring as they really have nothing to offer and no longivity. Other than those few that have been significant. Naturally we think of Jumbo and a few more. Gunther Gebels Safari [think thats bthe vright name and Lance Ramos African [Kenya I believe] who really did an impressive routine as a single act. Superior to even some single O Asians. Afew more. So be it but the ones you are showing are just general pictures ans a waste of time to look at. I appreciate your efforts but think Asians have more to offer and lots of them have been very significant. Regards from John Herriott

"Alexandre had up to five Elephants in his Show but for a long time he had Jenny, Baby and Afrique (not sure about the last one name). Wendell Huber and Christina Meyer presented them for a while.
Circus Carl Busch still have 2 Elephants. An Asian named Karla and the African Mashibi."
