  2. Just wondering if you would have any info on an elephant that once belonged to a tiny circus in Oregon, run by a family named Cramien. They spent one winter living in a house and barn owned by my father, next to my father's business. The elephant was young, and would come over on his own steam to my dad's shop, I think he could let himself in if the garage door was open, to visit my dad, loved my dad (didn't like most of the rest of us!)This would have been about 1962-1964, in Damascus Oregon, and for a while the family also lived in Portland. I just wondered if the elephant might still be alive and where it was.I don't remember if there was also a mom elephant; I was pretty young.

  3. Julia,
I have found records for two different elephants owned by the magician Stan Kramien. The first is recorded in the North American Regional Studbook for the Asian Elephant. This young female Asian elephant 'Gigi' was purchased from the Oakland Baby Zoo in February 1962 and reportedly died the same month. The studbook states she was born in Thailand in October 1961 and imported to California in December 1961.

The other elephant is discussed by elephant historian Buckles Woodcock. Mr. Kramien sold his young Asian male 'Toto' to circus guy Johnny Cline in 1964 and sold again to Circo Bells in Mexico two years later. The records of elephant historian Bob Cline give the following information regarding Toto (the elephant I assume you speak of):

    TOTO / ARKIE (Male Asian)
    1962 to 1963 - Stan Kramien
    1964 to 1965 - Johnny Cline
    1965 - Louis Goebel
1966 - Sold to Circo Bells in Mexico

I do not know if any other elephants were owned by the gentleman of whom you speak. I have attempted to contact Mr. Kramien in hopes of gathering more information and photographs of his former charges.

I eagerly anticipate associating with new individuals with an interest or history in elephants, elephant history and elephant record keeping. If you have further information regarding the animals or locations questioned in the article, please leave a comment or message me in an effort to complete their records for elephant historians.
